3 Steps to Effective Leadership

Being an effective leader requires more than title or position. Effective leaders do more than direct and control. Effective leaders lead through learning, demonstrating, and teaching.

It has been said that people do what people see leaders doing, not what the leader says. Followers hear their leaders say lots of things, but often see a gap between saying and doing. Effective leaders not only give direction, but model that direction through the following 3 Steps.

Leaders cannot give what they do not have. The Law of the Lid tells the leader that they should always be learning. By setting that example, sthe leader end a powerful message to the organization.

Tell me and I will forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I will learn. Benjamin Franklin

It is not enough to go through training. That is the first step. After learning, the leader must model the behaviors that are desired. Again, people do what people see. In The Leadership Challenge by Kouzes and Posner, this is referred to as “Modeling The Way.”

If the leader wants to know if they truly understand a concept, they should teach it to others. Through teaching the leader is forced to understand more than  the mechanics. tThrough teaching he leader is forced to also understand the why.

By learning you will teach; by teaching you will learn. Latin Proverb

So, if you want to be a better leader, keep on learning and doing. And then start teaching.
